James Caan a former Dragon’s Den assessor, now the Government’s new Social Mobility Tsar, has joined Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg calling on companies to give equal opportunities to children from all backgrounds. Caan suggested that parents shouldn’t help their children get into the job market.  Instead young adults should find their own way in life.  Finding a job should not be about “who you know rather than what you can do”.

Within days it emerged that Caan helped his own daughters Hanah, 25, and Jemma, 26, get their first steps on the career ladder.

Hanah spent a year working in Caan’s private equity firm, Hamilton Bradshaw, and then joined the board of trustees at the James Caan Foundation. She is also involved in the Start-Up Loans Company, an initiative aimed at helping young entrepreneurs and where her father is chairman.

Reportedly six months ago Caan’s older daughter Jemma started work at a recruitment firm, which he part-owns.

Father knows best

Contradicting his equal opportunities statement Caan admitted: “The fact is that parents will always have the innate feeling to help their children into jobs. I’m no different.”

Agreeing with Caan, the Deputy Prime Minister said: “I am a parent, I want to do the best for my child, every parent does. I don’t want us to deny parental instinct.”

Meanwhile in the USA a recruitment website for ‘beautiful people’ has been launched.

Greg Hodge, Managing Director of, explained: “An honest employer will tell you that it pays to hire good looking staff.  Attractive people tend to make a better first impression on clients, win more business and earn more. If an employer had an option between two people who are both strong candidates, but one is attractive and one is not, the attractive one will likely get hired. We’re realising the demand.”

According to Mashable the website, currently has around 750,000 members. It counts on users to determine if a prospective applicant is attractive. If they are not considered ‘hot’ enough, they have to remain out in the cold along with millions of other young adults who, according to UN agency report published in May, warns are “almost three times more likely than adults to be unemployed. The UN agency cautioned unrest with global youth unemployment forecast to reach 12.8% by 2018 after falling since 2009.
